Annual Newtown Open Participants Battle Each Other And The Rain

The 34th Annual Newtown Open’s semifinals and finals matches took place at Dickinson Park this past Saturday and Sunday. Tennis players from Newtown and nearby towns took to the courts in men’s and women’s singles and doubles, along with mixed doubles matches.

Although rain interfered with some of the play, comfortable weather conditions allowed most of the matches to unfold.

In the Men’s Open Singles bracket, Mark Pizzi and Lalo Suarez reached the finals. Their match was postponed by rain and was expected to me made up this week. Other finals results are as follows:

Men’s 40 Singles

Anthony Ditullio defeated  Marc Swanson, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.

Men’s 55 Singles

Bill Meier defeated Bob Comfort, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.

Men’s 55 Doubles

Dom Nocturne and Marc Swanson defeated Keith Butterfield and Rod Taylor, 6-3, 6-4.

Men’s Open Doubles

Adam Pizzi and Mark Pizzi defeated Bob Elliott and Owen Robertson, 7-6 (17-15), 6-2.

Women’s Open Singles

Eileen Frattaroli defeated Valery Sullivan, 6-2, 7-5.

Women’s 40 Singles

Jill Ross defeated Lisa Daly, 6-1, 7-5.

Mixed Doubles

Shawn Stillman and Valery Sullivan defeated Brian Bardinelli and Kate Coviello, 6-1, 6-2.
