LAKEVILLE, CONN. — The Morgan Lehman Gallery will present a solo exhibition of recent paintings by John Funt, opening with a reception on June 30, from 5 to 7 pm. The exhibition is organized in collaboration with James Graham & Sons, New York City, and will remain on view to August 11.

Funt’s landscapes are hybrids of real and imagined spaces. Working from photographs, memory and the geography surrounding his home in rural Connecticut, Funt creates spaces that are both highly stylized and evocative of the American landscape. His large, often horizontal, panels capture the physical and atmospheric qualities of the landscape and evoke thoughts of both real and a sublime, dreamlike environment.

Figures are never present in Funt’s paintings, and his recent work is void of all built structures, presenting each pristinely gorgeous landscape as untouched by human influence. His recent work is infused with a palette of green, blue and earth tones, but within this range of colors he creates a seemingly infinite variations of subtle hues. Building layer upon layer of wash and paint, Funt’s work is as much about the process of painting as it is about the finished product.

Funt was born in New York City in 1953 and received his bachelor’s degree from Kenyon College. He currently lives and works in Goshen, Conn., and is represented in New York by James Graham & Sons.
