WestConn To Host Health Careers Summer Seminar
WestConn To Host Health Careers Summer Seminar
DANBURY â Area high school students considering a health care career will get the opportunity to learn from professionals in the field and spend a day on the campus of Western Connecticut State University during the third annual Health Careers Summer Seminar.
The seminar, which will run from 8:45 am to 3 pm on June 24-28, will visit WestConnâs Midtown campus, 181 White Street, on Wednesday, June 26. Following a campus tour from 9 to 10 am, the students will participate from 10 to 11 am in a medical technology workshop instructed by WestConn Assistant Biology Professor Dr Ruth Gyure.
âItâll be interactive and theyâll have a chance to actually do things related to the field,â said Dr Gyure, coordinator of the universityâs medical technology program.
From 11 am to noon, the students will take part in a laboratory exercise related to bioterrorism. After lunch, which will be provided courtesy of the Office of the Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, students will meet from 1 to 2 pm with members of the WestConn nursing faculty before concluding with a class from 2 to 3 pm.
The weeklong seminar will feature guest speakers, team-building exercises, and workshops. The Education Connection will host activities on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday. New Milford Hospital will host on Thursday.
The Education Connectionâs School to Career Program and the Northwestern Area Health Education Center sponsor the seminar. Karen Moore, the program coordinator, said the experience will be both educational and career-oriented.
âItâs an excellent way for students to get a good overview of a lot of careers in health care,â Ms Moore said. âTheyâll get to talk to adults who work in those careers and find out what it takes to be successful.â
The seminar is free but space is limited. For more information, call Karen Moore at 791-1904 or JoAnn DâAvirro at 860-482-3426.
