Improvements At The Pleasance

This summer, visitors to The Pleasance at 1 Main Street have noticed that the small park owned and maintained by The Bee Publishing Co. Inc has expanded. The area on the west side of the property has sprouted a new wooden flagpole, stone paths, and a few pleasant places to sit.

The Newtown Bee Publisher R. Scudder Smith said the expansion began with the erection of the flagpole and then spread out from there. Several specimen trees were planted in the area, including three Leprechaun ash trees, a Harry Lauder Walking Stick, flowering plum trees, and a magnolia.

The meandering stone path leads to three benches –– two granite and one wooden — with great views of the rest of The Pleasance. Rhododendrons, holly bushes, and a bed of annuals and perennials also help create this new oasis in the center of town.

The Pleasance was created in 1997 as a public garden on private property. It is open 24 hours a day and has proven to be a popular place for rest and reflection for Newtowners. The Pleasance is available for private and public functions for free. Reservations for such events are required, however, so that conflicts do not occur. If you are interested in booking The Pleasance for such an event, call Sandy at The Bee, 426-3141.
