Town Meeting Or Sitcom?
Town Meeting Or Sitcom?
To the Editor:
The town meeting at Newtown High School re: Fairfield Hills and 5/6 school played like a scene from the â60s sitcom, âGreen Acres.â There was Sam Drucker, er, Herb Rosenthal running from his front row seat, up the aisle to the microphone to object (to anything and everything!) and back again to his seat whenever someone proposed anything that differed from his agenda. How comical!
Nominate an objective moderator? No! How about a detailed, seemingly sound fiscal plan (Thereâs a novelty in Newtown) No! The entire event was pre-ordained and was never truly open for residents to participate in shaping the future of Newtown. Anyone who dared to attempt such a maneuver would be summarily dismissed. What a joke! I half expected to see olâ Mr Haney outside in the parking lot peddling his wares after the âmeetingâ/ âvoteâ was over.
The first selectman should have greater authority and a longer term? Not this one! Itâs amazing that this is the best Newtown has to offer! That he could run unopposed in the last election?! Iâd like to nominate my five year-old son, Gregory, as a candidate for first selectman. Heâs decisive, welcomes suggestions, plays nicely with others and has just as good chance to make the right decisions for out townâs direction as our current âleader.â The difference is Gregory wonât waste our time, or our money.
