Newtown basketball is on the rise!

That is the rallying cry for the Rising Star Summer Basketball League, which will soon be entering its third season. The league is sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Departments and features clinics, games, and playoffs – all at the Treadwell Park courts.

Newtown High School boasts two of the top basketball teams in the South-West Conference – with players like Ryan Walker, Josh Dittmar, John Wesley and Andrew Fiscella leading the boys and Ally Gellert, Lori Iwanicki and Morgan Haines leading the girls – and the Rising Star league is an effort to help keep those teams competitive for years to come.

“We are thrilled with the potential we see in many of our younger players,” said John Quinn, NHS boys’ coach, “and we are offering an opportunity for other players to further develop their basketball skills.”

The program will begin the week of Monday, July 9. Each team (numbering 12 players, giving each player an opportunity to vacation and participate in other athletic events) will generally play two games a week, leading up to the playoffs. Clinics and an All-Star game are also in the works. All the teams are coached by Newtown High School varsity players.

Each participant will receive a Rising Star t-shirt with a new basketball logo.

Registration forms have already been sent home, but for those who haven’t received one please go to the Parks and Recreation office. The program code is 41020A for the boys and 41020B for the girls. The fee is $60.
