NMS Piñata Club Thanked For Relay For Life Participation With Ice Cream

By Eliza Hallabeck

When the rain started pouring on Newtown’s 2010 Relay For Life, held on Saturday, June 5, on the Fairfield Hills Campus, all Laura Warren was worrying about was piñatas.

The Newtown Middle School Piñata club had created piñatas to decorate the Relay For Life team Las Mamacitas’ tent. The group ended up being the highest raising team during Newtown’s Relay For Life this year, collecting more than $19,000 by Saturday and more after.

“I almost got divorced and electrified,” said Mrs Warren, whose husband helped her save the piñatas from the tent, “but I saved the piñatas.”

All but one…a piñata created by club member Jack O’Brien “gave its life for Relay.”

Mrs Warren said she felt terrible about Jack’s piñata and had a special gift for him when Las Mamacitas thanked the NMS Piñata Club on Wednesday, June 9, by bringing back the piñatas and sharing ice cream.

Jack, who was not present for the Wednesday ice cream event, was given two tickets to Quassy Amusement Park and a framed picture of his piñata.

Once home from Relay with the piñatas, Mrs Warren said her husband helped her bring them into her basement, where they dried out.

The Piñata Club worked for months on the piñatas, and Mrs Warren said she was glad she could return them to the students.
