Newtown police were on the scene late Thursday morning investigating a robbery at Newtown Savings Bank around 11:30 am. Police were alerted to the incident and began looking for a male who was said to be wearing blue jeans, a tattered brown T-shirt, and wearing glasses. He reportedly left the bank through its lower parking lot, near the drive-thru area. It is not yet known if the man escaped with any money.

No weapons were shown, but the existence of one was implied through a note passed from the robber. The bank was immediately put into lockdown, and police began putting up crime scene tape around the building at 39 Main Street, including blocking access to any of the property’s driveways, one of which also connects to the lower lot of Edmond Town Hall at 45 Main Street.

By 11:45 am, State Police Troop A in Southbury was sending a trooper with a canine to help in a search of the area.

Reed, Hawley, and Newtown Middle schools were immediately put on lockdown. Newtown High School was locked, but classes were not in session on Thursday.

“We have procedures, practiced and in place, to make sure that it is safe [in such instances],” School Superintendent Janet Robinson told The Bee.

A Waterbury branch of Webster Bank was also reportedly “hit” earlier in the morning. It was not immediately clear whether the incidents were related.

Police are continuing another investigation into a burglary at another Newtown Savings Bank branch at Sand Hill Plaza overnight, May 28–29. That incident occurred when the bank was closed. Intruders cut a hole in the roof on that occasion and got access to an ATM machine on the interior of the bank, but police reported the burglar was unable to get any money out of the device.

Updates on the robbery investigation can be found at The Bee website, newtownbee.com.
