Newtown Schools Honored

By American Heart Association

By Larissa Lytwyn

Sharon Bean of the American Heart Association presented a plaque to Superintendent of Schools Evan Pitkoff on behalf of the district’s “longtime” participation in the Jump Rope for Hearts and Hoops for Hearts program during the Board of Education’s last meeting on June 15.

“It is very laudable that Newtown schools have been so dedicated to our organization and this project,” Ms Bean said.

Jump Rope for Hearts and Hoops for Hearts allows students to raise money for the American Heart Association’s educational and research programs by engaging in such activities as jump roping and basketball.

“The benefits of these programs are enormous,” said Ms Bean, “particularly among growing rates of childhood obesity and other issues. It’s encouraging to see schools like Newtown’s making a difference.”
