Lighting Up The Relay For Life

To the Editor:

On behalf of the Luminaria Committee for the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to the many wonderful people who helped us stage the luminaria ceremony on Saturday, June 12.

Newtown should be proud of all the musical talent within our community. Thank you to Newtown Middle School students Sydney Russell, Diana Curcuruto, and Allie Makuch for your beautiful solos; Dr George Cohen who played the bagpipes; Newtown High School choir members Leslie Greenfield, Amanda Eventoff, Erik Bagger, Matt Grills, and Nick Varga for your harmonious performance; Newtown Choral Society members Mary Andreotta and Sharon Goodkowsky for your uplifting solos and duets.

We are so grateful for the hard work and dedication of the High School Tech Club member Ed Wolf for the slide show presentation and members Aleks Alves, Josh Berkman, Tim Duffy, Derik Hammer, Greg Jurman, Ryan Lanza, Sandy Montenez, Paul Murphy, Scott Newberry, Lauren Staple, Matti Toikka, Adam Warren, and Hank Washburn who provided the sound system throughout the evening and into the wee hours of the morning.

Hats off to the Newtown Parks and Recreation Department for their unending continued support all day and into the night.

We also take this opportunity to thank the following Newtown businesses: Stop & Shop, Dunkin’ Donuts, My Place Restaurant, St Rose of Lima Church, school and preschool. These organizations kindly gave us the opportunity to reach the community and sell the luminaria candles which spelled out the words HOPE and CURE.

Finally, we thank everyone who bought luminarias to honor and remember those affected by cancer and who submitted pictures of loved ones for the slide presentation. All pictures can be picked up at Bob Tendler’s office at 17 Church Hill Road; 426-5679.

Our sincere thanks to all,

Alice Mascher, Chairman

on behalf of

The Luminaria Committee
