A four-run, first-inning explosion was just what Advantage Loan needed to get it started on its way to the Babe Ruth Softball U14 Divisional championship. Advantage Loan defeated The Quiet Company, 23-16, to claim the trophy.

Kate Levasseur led off the first inning with a walk and was followed by hits from Caitlin Thursland and Kendal Deakin to load the bases. Ashley Ferris and Christy Caruso cleared them, though, to stake Advantage Loan to a 4-0 lead.

The Quiet Company struck for a run in the second inning when Abby Atkinson, Christina Wolf and Sophie Cerreta put together base hits. But then Advantage scored five more times in the bottom of the frame – on the legs of Jessica Cosgrove, Remy Ball and Michelle Palladino – to extend its lead to 9-1.

The Quiet Company managed to keep it close, trimming the Advantage lead to 9-6 in the third inning on the strength of a walk issued to Jen Truchess and timely hitting by Kate VanVeen and Lauren Reed.

But Advantage once again picked up the pace, scoring five runs on key hits from Katie Rose Crevier, Alana Wenick and Tara Meehan. Shaun Smith’s all-around effort rounded out the Advantage Loan offense.

Ferris, Caruso and Levasseur were solid in the field while Cosgrove was a sparkplug behind the plate.

Ball pitched a solid game.

The Quiet Company reached the championship game by virtue of a 21-13 win over Walker Industrials in the semi-finals. Jenna Van Waalwijk, Abby Atkinson and Sophie Cerreta combined for seven hits and 11 runs scored.

Alex Doniger pitched well.

For Walker, Rachel Warbuton belted a three-run homer while Kaitlin Herwig pitched four strong innings and Dana Happel made s great defensive play at second base.
