There was a different look to the annual Newtown Open Tennis Tournament this year â a different look and a couple of different champions.
With No. 1 seed Bob Elliott succumbing to Gonsalo Suarez in the quarterfinals of the Menâs Open Singles division and Akash Lamba absent from the draw, the door was wide open for a new champion to emerge and that new champion was Max Barry.
In the brutal heat and unbearable humidity, Barry â the No. 4 seed â slipped past No. 2 seed Bob Reby 7-6, 7-5 in the championship round on Sunday at Dickinson Park. Barry had beaten Colin Robertson in the first round and defeated Ryan Adamonis in the quarterfinals to reach the semis ⦠where he topped Saurez 6-1, 6-3 to advance to the finals.
On the womenâs side, No. 1 seed Carol Lipnick toughed out a 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) decision over Sandy Atanasoff for the championship. With just four players in the Womenâs Open Singles draw, Lipnick defeated Nancy Hamilton 6-1, 6-2 in the semis to advance to the title match while Atanasoff survived a hard 7-5, 6-7, 6-4 win over Kris Royer in the semifinals.

In Menâs Open Doubles, No. 2 seeds Gene Chappell and Val Stoiana defeated No. 1 seeds Elliott and Owen Robertson 6-2, 6-3.
In Menâs 40 Singles, unseeded Anthony Ditullio defeated unseeded Mariano Moran 6-3, 3-6, 4-0 (retired). Ditullio had a three-set win over Al Turner the day before while Moran had earned a 7-5, 6-4 win over No. 3 seed Greg Anderson.
In the Menâs 40 Doubles championship, unseeded Anderson and Marc Swanson defeated No. 1 seed Moran and Tom Nash 6-0, 4-6, 7-5. Anderson/Swanson reached the finals by stopping No. 2 seed Ray Bucknam and Steve Cornell 7-6, 6-3 in the semis.
In Menâs 5 Singles, No. 1 seed Elmer Adams defeated Rod Taylor 7-6, 6-1. And in Menâs 55 Doubles, No. 1 seed Keith Butterfield and Taylor defeated Billy and Ferd Starbuck 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.
In Mixed Doubles, No. 2 seed Ryan Adamonis and Lauren Dulton defeated No. 1 seed Shirley Avril and Randy Saadeh 6-3, 6-0. Adamonis and Dulton advanced to the finals through the default of the Gene and Lorraine Chappell duo while Avril and Saadeh advanced by stopping Dave Chapdelaine and Carol Lipnick 4-6, 6-3, 7-6.
In Womenâs Open Doubles, No. 1 seed Debra Turner and Liz Shaker defeated No. 2 seed Linda Fothe and Giuliana Montenegro 6-7, 6-4, 6-1. Both duos breezed through semifinal matches in another small draw.
In Womenâs 40 Singles, Debbie Birkins defeated Giuliana Montenegro 3-6, 7-5 (retired) in the semifinals and then accepted a default win over No. 1 seed Eileen Frattaroli in the finals. In Womenâs 40 Doubles, unseeded Polly Edwards and Trudy Meyer defeated unseeded Birkins and June Frost 6-0, 6-3. Edwards and Meyer had reached the finals with a default win over Joan Pagliuco and Sui-Ying Wong while Birkins and Frost toughed out a 7-5, 6-4 win over Susan Clark and Anna Zohn.
