Saluting The Soldiers
Saluting The Soldiers
To the Editor:
The Salute the Soldiers ceremony May 28 at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 308 in conjunction with the traditional Memorial Day ceremony was a collective demonstration of the Newtown communityâs gratitude to its fallen soldiers, active duty troops, and veterans.
More than 60 Newtown residents currently are serving in the armed forces. In addition to reading their names aloud during the ceremony, the committee had the privilege of talking with many military families who shared stories of courage displayed by their loved ones, serving to protect our national interests. Connecticut has lost 26 soldiers in the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The event opened with an invocation by the Rev Mark Gross of the Baptist Church in Stratford, followed by a welcome by Boyd Saxton, American Legion Post 202 adjutant; and remarks by State Representative Julia Wasserman; Newtown Police Officer Bean; Donald Monckton, former commander of American Legion Post 202; and First Selectman Herb Rosenthal. Mr Saxton served as master of ceremonies.
Newtown High School students Tyler von Oy, Amanda Eventoff, Kayla Koschel, and Dan Morehouse sang a rousing rendition of âThe National Anthemâ and âGod Bless America,â and Edward Small played âTapsâ on trumpet with due reverence to the solemn occasion. Five members of the Second Company Governors Horse guard also participated.
Members of Boy Scout Troop 70 performed a flag folding demonstration, led by Senior Patrol Leader Evan Breitling and assisted by American Legion Post 202. Alice Saxton read her original poem, âThe Wall,â a tribute to Vietnam veterans.
Everyone in attendance received an American flag, compliments of Caldwell & Walsh Building Construction, Inc, Linnell Real Estate, Flagpole Realty, Village Barber Shop, and Anthony Cascone.
Mr Saxton delivered the benediction, followed by the firing of a cannon to commemorate the sacrifice of those who fought and died for their country. District American Legion Commander Richard J. Olson brought a weapons carrier with the cannon.
Starbucks and Dunkinâ Donuts provided complimentary coffee and donuts to encourage those in attendance to linger and share their memories, thoughts, experiences, and tributes.
We appreciate the patriotic spirit of everyone who contributed to and attended the ceremony and VFW Post 308 for allowing us to host the event at their property. Most of all, we thank the soldiers and veterans for their courage and bravery in guarding our freedom.
