Garner Inmates Assault Prison Staffers

On June 9, state police responded to investigate two separate assaults by Garner Correctional Institution inmates against employees at the state’s high-security prison at 50 Nunnawauk Road.

At about 11:04 am, state police learned of an incident in which inmate Charles Redshirt, 22, allegedly assaulted three state Department of Correction (DOC) male employees, who were checking on Redshirt following his detention for an incident that occurred the preceding day, state police said.

All three employees who received minor injuries in the June 9 incident were treated at a hospital and then released, state police said.

Redshirt has since been transferred to Northern Correctional Institution in Somers, which has the state prison system’s maximum security facilities, according to the DOC.

State police said the June 9 incident is under investigation.

Redshirt was incarcerated on March 17 on a violation of probation charge, for which he was sentenced on June 2 to up to 22 months in prison.

At about 7:05 pm on June 9, state police learned that inmate Joseph Daniels, 42, had assaulted a correction officer in the prison. The correction officer received a minor injury, state police said.

State police charged Daniels with assault on a correction officer and with refusal to be fingerprinted.  Daniels was arraigned in court on the charges the following day.

Daniels is serving a 30-year sentence in Garner on a murder conviction.
