Newtown police said that early on the morning of Friday, June 16, they arrested a Botsford man on seven charges in connection with a March incident involving two pipe bombs at the Newtown Village mobile home park, 301 South Main Street.

After investigation by the bomb squad, police determined that there was a possible public safety hazard and then transported the two plastic pipe bombs to another area for the devices' safe disposal. FBI agents assisted with the bomb's disposal, police said.

The police probe determined that the devices "were very likely improvised explosive devices or pipe bombs."Tests indicated that material within the devices "were 'energetic' in nature," police said, explaining that the substances were highly flammable, and when contained, were likely to be explosive. The FBI laboratory later chemically analyzed the substances found, police said.

The police investigation included several interviews of Bailey, which led to a search of Bailey's mobile home, police said. During that search, a number of items were identified as "suspicious in nature," leading detectives to conclude that Bailey was the likely bomb maker, police said.

Police arrested Bailey on two counts each of illegal possession of explosives, bomb manufacturing, and first-degree reckless endangerment. Police also charged him with one count of making a false statement.

Police held Bailey on $50,000 bail and transported him to state Superior Court in Danbury on June 16 for arraignment on the seven charges.
