PITTSBURGH (AP) â The director who shepherded the Carnegie Museum of Art through a major renovation and bringing in expanded exhibits is leaving at yearâs end.
Fifty-nine-year-old Richard Armstrong has been the museumâs director since 1996. He came to the museum in 1992 as curator of contemporary art and was given the job of organizing the 1995 Carnegie International exhibition.
Museum chairman William Hunt says Armstrong is leaving the museum in the best physical and financial shape in a very long time.
Armstrong oversaw the renovations of the Heinz and Scaife galleries and the Heinz Architectural Center was expanded, too. Endowments have also increased under Armstrong, who says he is leaving because the museum will benefit from a new set of eyes.
