Senior Gold

Rooster Rumble â In the first annual Newtown Rooster Rumble, the Newtown Senior Girls Gold squad captured four wins in five contests, losing to Wilton in the semi-finals. The locals defeated New Milford (5-3), Southbury (6-3), Darien 7A (9-2) and Ridgefield (10-1) before succumbing to Wilton (6-4).

Steph Suhoza, Meredith LaPerch, Sam Dinnan and Meghan Gibbons led a strong defensive effort as Rachel Fatse, Jill Jagoe and Suhoza were outstanding in the cage. Lisa Vendel, Annie Fletcher, Meghan Bridges, Kaitlin Brophy, Brittany Wiberg, Kaley Kruger and Nicole Waterhouse powered the offense as Katie Canavan, Kara Brown, Liz Emerson and Maggie Korth all had great field games.

Newtown 13, Southbury 6 â Newtown finished out the regular season on a high note, beating a pumped up Southbury A team at Southbury. Meghan Gibbons was a ground ball machine, getting seven on the day, as Steph Suhoza, Meredith LaPerch, Sam Dinnan and Gibbons played sparkling D. Rachel Fatse was great in the goal with seven saves and the offense was led by Lisa Vendel, Kaitlyn Brophy, Meghan Bridges, and Annie Fletcher.

Junior Blue

Newtown 2, New Milford 1 â Christina Gould and Meredith Bridges scored for Newtown in the win. Emily Molloy was strong in goal as Tess Kniesel and Melissa Christiano had 3 ground balls each.

Ridgefield 3, Newtown 1 â Christina Gould scored with an assist by Katie McManus. Elie Mouchantant had 12 saves in goal and Sidney Hansen scooped four ground Balls.

Newtown 4, Ridgefield 1 â Meaghan Harkins scored with a double assist from Julia Trudell and Tressa Scott to lead Newtown. Christina Gould scored multiple goals as Erin Kenning had three ground balls and Andrea Sayegh was aggressive on defense.

John Jay 7, Newtown 4 â Brianna LeBlanc made six saves in goal as Newtown fell to John Jay. Meredith Bridges, Catherine LoTrecchiano, Meaghan Harkins and Caroline Kingsley all scored.

Bantam Girls

Southbury 5, Newtown 4 â Kristie VosWinkel and Anna Northrop scored two goals each to led Newtown. Jilliane Lyons and Emily Maher each had one assist. Jaclyn Daily, Lauren Lennon and Maggie Kost played well all around as Olivia Korth was solid in goal.

How do you propose tapping the brakes, Dave? 8-30g already trumps any local regulations- you don't have a brake pedal to push. Brookfield, Trumbull and now Ridgefield have a clear case for a moratorium based on the development (thanks to 8-30g) that has already occurred. I don't see a clear case for Newtown to request a moratorium... yet.

Nobody is suggesting shutting the doors on new neighbors. What neighboring towns are doing, and what we should be doing too, is to tap the brakes on all of the multi-family residential development proposals so that we can spend 6 months updating our regulations such that if you want to build dense residential housing here, XX percent of it needs to be affordable (we will never make any headway on increasing our percentage of affordable housing otherwise, short of 8-30g), and the rest needs to be done in as low an impact manner as possible. Low impact on traffic, health & safety, the environment and on the cost of town services.

Ned, please familarize yourself with 8-30G, and then please share the unique flaws that may be helpful in formulating a denial An 8-30g project can be denied only on very narrow grounds – i.e., if it presents health, safety or other concerns that exceed a town’s need for affordable housing. According to the TOG website, “projects cannot be rejected for incompatibility with a Town’s Plan of Conservation and Development (POCD); density; traffic congestion; height; aesthetics; concerns of neighbors or the community; and failure to comply with local zoning regulations.” 8-30g proposals are rarely denied by planning and zoning officials because the burden of proof on appeal is on the town. Appeals are costly, but a municipality can be successful in a court case if it has sufficiently established that the concerns leading to denial are factual and substantive.

P&Z Should Reject Vessel Proposal

The town should certainly measure its performance against the statewide strategies. Unless I missed it I only know of one small cluster of homes that would meet the affordable housing program. Given the 500 or so new units being added in the last 10 years I think that 4/500 would not meet the metric to allow for a moratorium. I mean, fingers crossed for a Christmas miracle but I suspect we will see a few 8-30's sent our way in a method to avoid the Nimby mob. Thanks, Nimby mob.
