Arrivals And Departures
Regular readers of The Newtown Bee may have noticed a few changes over the past few weeks. We have recently bid farewell to two long-time editorial department staffers.
Eliza (Hallabeck) Van, who served the community for 15 years as our primary education reporter and most recently our Education Editor, will be devoting full attention to husband Ky and their beautiful new baby Kayden — and lest we forget their new pup, Bumi!
Reporter Alissa Silber has transitioned from journalism into the nonprofit sector, and Bee readers may see her around town — or see the fruits of her work as she transitions to the staff of the Catherine Violet Hubbard Foundation and Animal Sanctuary.
We have welcomed reporter Noelle Veillette, a recent Western Connecticut State University grad who stepped in without hesitation and with great enthusiasm covering the education beat in the few months she has been on the Bee team. In the coming months, we hope to broaden that scope of coverage and anticipate great things no matter what subject she is tackling.
The many followers and fans of Bill Glass and his stellar images displayed across local social networks are now seeing his photographic skills regularly complimenting our pages. And we are thrilled to have him behind the camera capturing memorable moments for all our readers to witness and enjoy.
Over the summer, we will also be featuring the work of reporter / intern and Sandy Hook resident Owen Brown, who came to The Bee for the exposure and experience he will need as he transitions from Sports Editor to Editor-In-Chief of his newspaper at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) this fall.
And starting last week in our “Enjoy” section, you began seeing the byline of intern Maia Labbe, a Newtowner and rising sophomore at the College of Journalism and Communications at the University of Florida. While much of her time at school has been occupied with broadcasting, we are looking forward to seeing her talent, including photography, reflected in our pages over the next couple of months.
Finally, we still have a full-time reporter position available and hope to acquire yet another talented addition to our able team sooner rather than later. Anyone qualified and who wants to work in a busy hyper-local community newspaper is invited to send a note of interest and resume to editor@thebee.com.
