Lions Close Out With Three-Game Win Streak

With three consecutive wins – the last, a 12-1 win over Swift Junior High of Watertown – the Newtown Middle School baseball team wrapped up the 2007 season at 6-6.

Cody Williams fired a three-hitter, striking out six batters along the way, and helped himself by driving in three runs. Kyle Packer also drove in three runs while Evan Noonan went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two stolen bases.

Ryan Tita also went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two stolen bases as Oliver Powers went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Brian Czel, Curtis Droniak and Derek Krewson collected key base hits and each drove in a run to fuel the attack.

“The record does not speak to the talent of the team,” said head coach Jason Christian. “There were a few key injuries, other involvements, and just some untimely mistakes which, in the end, cost us some wins. The boys did play well down the stretch and I believe this group will have much success in high school.”

Czel batted .581 with 19 RBI to pace the Lions while Tita hit .462 with 15 RBI and 19 runs scored. Noonan hit .388 with eight stolen bases while Matt Datin drove in 13 runs and Oliver Powers batted .280 with nine RBI. RJ Roman hit for a .455 average with nine RBI and Jack Kneisel boasted a .425 on-base percentage.

Matt Harrison (.333 BA), Ken Toal (6 RBI), Packer (.290 BA), Will Arndt (.285 BA), Williams (2.65 ERA), Droniak (5 runs scored), Krewson (5 runs scored), Matt Genovese (2 runs scored) and Drew Robinson (1 run scored) all contributed.
