Lubinsky An Eagle Scout

On May 12, Troop 270 inducted Alex Lubinsky as its 55th Eagle Scout.

The Eagle Scout award is Scouting’s highest honor and is earned only by a few who participate in Scouting. The special Court of Honor was held at Newtown Meeting house and was attended by many of Alex’s family and friends, as well as the members of Troop 270.

During the ceremony, 15 Eagle Scouts in attendance were called up to be part of the Eagle’s induction. In addition, Alex’s grandfather’s sash was brought up to be part of this ceremony. Alex’s grandfather was a Silver Palm Eagle Scout.

Guest speakers and those making presentations to Alex included Tom Maxwell, Scatacook District Commissioner for Newtown; Michael Abramson, Youth Leadership Training Scoutmaster; Wade Anderson, Order of the Arrow Advisor; and Jeffrey Tolson, guidance counselor at Newtown High School.

During the ceremony the Eagle Scout has an opportunity to address the audience. Alex gave an entertaining address recalling many of his Scouting experiences from troop activities, summer camp, the National Scout Jamboree, Youth Leadership Training camp, as well as his Scouting adventures while he was living with his family in France. Alex also spoke about the deep friendships he has made in Scouting and counseled his fellow Scouts to live their lives to get the most out of every day.

For his Eagle Scout project, Alex created an information kiosk at Newtown High School. A multicolored LED display was installed to display important messages that the school and student organizations want to convey. Informational fliers now are placed on the four-sided corkboard kiosk. It also has a map of the school and other vital information posted behind Plexiglas.

At the Court of Honor, Alex also received a Bronze Palm, which is earned after a Scout has been active for an additional three months since earning his Eagle rank and has earned five merit badges beyond the 21 needed for Eagle. Alex is only the sixth Eagle Scout in the troop’s history to receive a Bronze Palm, and is on track to earn Gold and Silver Palms.

Earlier this year, Alex received the National Camping Award from the Boy Scouts of America for 100 nights of overnight camping. Alex will be attending the World Scout Jamboree in Hylands Park, Chelmsford, England, this summer.
