Hummingbirds To The Focus Of Audubon Talk
Hummingbirds To The Focus Of Audubon Talk
DERBY â Naugatuck Valley Audubon Society will host a program about hummingbirds on Tuesday, June 19, at 7:30 pm. The program will be presented by Gina Nichol, a naturalist, guide and owner of Sunrise Birding, a birding and wildlife tour company based in Connecticut.
With 330 species known in the world, hummingbirds are the second largest family of birds after flycatchers. These tiny aeronautic marvels have the ability to hover, fly backward, and migrate long distances. Their physiological capacity to raise and lower their heart rate and body temperature to survive cold nights is unmatched in the animal world.
The program will illustrate the amazing adaptations of hummingbirds and describe their fascinating life histories. Vivid photographs will show hummingbirds in the United States, Costa Rica, and Ecuador.
Ms Nichol holds a BS in Environmental Education and an MA in Educational Technology. Prior to establishing her own wildlife touring company, Ms Nichol began leading tours for Audubon Nature Odysseys in the early 1990s. She has also participated in numerous research projects involving wildlife. In addition, she has traveled extensively in the United States and abroad, studying animals in their natural habitats in such exotic locations as Galapagos Island and others.
The program is open to the public and will take place at Kellogg Environmental Center, 500 Hawthorne Avenue, which is operated by the DEPâs Office of Environmental Education. The suggested walk-in donation for the presentation is $5.
Prior to the program, a buffet dinner will be held at 6:30 pm. It is also open to the public. The dinner is $20; advance registration and payment must be received by June 16. For reservations call Kellogg Environmental Center at 734-2513.
