Got Relay?

We Sure Do!

To the Editor:

So often, we have been asked the question: What is Relay For Life? How hard that is to answer; until you experience it, you cannot describe it accurately. And experience it we did, on June 9 and 10, Newtown’s Relay For Life had close to 4,000 attendees at any given time. It was a time of reflection, a time to be entertained, and time to come together as a community with one goal. The goal — awareness, memoriam, celebration of life, and fundraising.

We wish to thank each and every member of the community for their efforts toward reaching this goal. To the teams that started the fundraising in the fall of 2006 and continued right through the night of relay. To every elementary school that embraced our first Kids For A Cure relay. To the corporate sponsors, without their continued financial support this relay would not be as successful as it is. To our wonderful volunteers, committee members and chairpersons, who gave of themselves selflessly and joyfully — this relay would never have happened without their endless commitment. To our town’s clergy, who led inspiring services that reinforced our reasons to relay. To our guest entertainers, a true example of giving from the heart. To the caregivers, for your compassion and tireless support. And lastly and most importantly to our survivors, your strength and courage is what truly leads us and continues to inspire us. We really wish we could name each and every person, corporation. and organization, but there is no way we could do it in the required number of words, a heartfelt thank you to everyone.

We ask that you please visit the website www.acsevents.org/relay/ctnewtown to view the incredible fundraising each individual/team accomplished and also visit our corporate sponsor recognition so every effort can be made to support them. In addition, if you have not had the opportunity to make a donation in honor of or in memory of a loved one, you can do so on the website or mail to PO Box 831, Newtown CT 06470.

We don,t know if we can ever thank you enough for your dedication and wonderful spirit. But I’m sure you will all be very happy to hear that this year’s relay has already raised $350,000 and each year we are closer to eliminating this horrendous disease.

In Hope of A Cure
