Equipment Failure

State police said that a 2005 International 4000 truck owned by a scrap metal recycling company, which was driven by Brandon Carpenter, 23, of Waterbury, had an equipment failure with its debris screen, while traveling on westbound Interstate 84, about 2,000 feet west of Exit 10, at about 11:46 am on June 5.

The screen dropped and struck a nearby 1998 Toyota Corolla sedan driven by James Morlino, 59, of Danbury, state police said. There were no injuries. Enforcement information was not available.

BMW Vs Ford

State police report a two-vehicle accident on westbound Interstate 84, about 1,000 feet west of Exit 11’s off-ramp about 7:12 am on June 5.

The collision involved a 2013 BMW 5350-XI sedan driven by Sherman Trotman, 51, of Waterbury, and a 2011 Ford Ranger pickup truck driven by Richard Kudzma, 55, of Naugatuck, state police said. There were no injuries. Because both drivers took actions that caused the crash, state police said they took no enforcement.

Jeep Strikes Honda

Amid slow-moving traffic on westbound Interstate 84, about 7:50 am on June 6, near the Exit 10 off-ramp, motorist Terry Hurd, 51, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee, SUV, changed travel lanes and struck a 2015 Honda Accord driven by William Greco, 56, of Naugatuck, state police said.

There were no injuries. Hurd received a infraction for failure to drive in the proper lane.

Pickup Crash

Motorist Gregory Garland, 34, of Danbury, who was driving a 2015 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck westward on Interstate 84, about 10:42 am on June 6, struck the highway’s median guardrail and then crossed back over two lanes of traffic, coming to rest on the right road shoulder, state police said.

There were no injuries. The incident is under investigation.

Main Street Crash

About 12:42 pm on June 6, an elderly man was driving a compact sedan northward on Main Street near the Newtown Savings Bank office building, when the sedan apparently veered to the right and struck an apparently unoccupied auto, which was parked along the curbline.

Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded to the scene to check the driver for possible injuries. Newtown Hook & Ladder volunteer firefighters also responded. Police did not provide details on the incident.

Warrant

After learning that police held a warrant for his arrest, Jaroslaw Magon, 50, of Newtown went to the police station about 7:50 am on June 7 to turn himself over to police.

Police charged Magon with violation of probation. Magon was held on $5,000 bail and scheduled to appear in Superior Court that day to answer the charge.

Two Keys

On the morning of June 7, police received a blue keychain with two keys attached, which had been found near the intersection of Main Street and East Street. Police are holding it for safekeeping. Nissan Hits Subaru

While traveling on eastbound Interstate 84 about 1:36 pm on June 8, motorist John Greco, 58, of Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y., who was driving a 2016 Nissan Sentra, made a lane change and struck a 2008 Subaru Impreza being driven by Craig Kovacs, Jr, 27, of Southbury, state police said.

There were no injuries. State police verbally warned Greco for making an unsafe lane change.

Asleep At Wheel

State police report that at about 4:06 am on June 9, motorist Margarita Opinski, 44, of Danbury, who was driving a 2007 Toyota Highlander SUV westward on Interstate 84, east of Exit 9, fell asleep at the wheel, after which the vehicle drove off the road’s right shoulder and struck some guardrailing.

A 34-year-old male passenger received minor injuries, state police said. State police said Opinski failed to maintain the proper lane.

Chevrolet Into Cables

At about 4:22 pm on June 9, motorist Matthew Rappa, 35, of Poughquag, N.Y., was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu eastward on Interstate 84, near Exit 11, when he lost control of the auto and struck some guardcabling on the highway’s median, state police said.

There were no injuries. State police verbally warned Rappa for failure to maintain the proper lane.

South Main Street Accident

A two-vehicle collision occurred on South Main Street, just south of its intersection with Mile Hill Road, about 4:36 pm on June 10.

That accident involved motorist Michele Z. Mirmina, 53, of Trumbull, who was driving a 2014 Jeep Cherokee SUV, and motorist Natale George Papallo, 54, of Southbury, who was driving A 2003 Volkswagen Passat, police said.

There were no injuries. Mirmina was verbally warned for following too closely.

Sedan Vs Pickup

A two-vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of Berkshire Road and Paugussett Road about 6:05 pm on June 10.

Motorist Samuel Donovan, 30, of Wallingford, who was driving a 2006 Honda Accord sedan, was on Paugussett Road and was seeking to turn left onto eastbound Berkshire Road, as motorist Keith Brown, 60, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 2011 Ford F-350 pickup truck, was seeking to make a left turn from eastbound Berkshire Road onto Paugussett Road, police said.

The vehicles collided. There were no injuries. After investigating, police said they verbally warned Donovan for failure to drive in the proper lane.

Evading Responsibility

Police report that sometime between 1 and 2 pm on June 11, an unknown motorist struck and damaged a wooden fence at a property at 214 Hattertown Road and then drove away from the scene.

The vehicle involved is believed to be a gray Hyundai Sonata sedan between the model years of 2011 to 2014. The vehicle would have a damaged headlamp and damaged front bumper.

Acura Vs Honda

A two-vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of Wasserman Way and Berkshire Road about 6:44 pm on June 11.

Involved in that accident were motorist Bernard Macklin, 52, of Hamden, who was driving a 2012 Honda TL sedan, and motorist Angela Alexander, 51, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 2013 Honda Accord, police said. There were no injuries. Macklin received a written warning for traveling an unreasonable distance apart.
