Rooster Rumble Senior Girls Lacrosse Tournament

The Rooster Rumble Girls’ Lacrosse tournament held in Newtown this past Saturday. The tourney draws some of the best seventh and eight grade teams in the state to play some great lacrosse and have a great time. This year’s participant’s included Simsbury, New Milford, Darien, New Canaan, Greenwich, New Fairfield, John Jay, Avon, Wilton, Southbury and Ridgefield. The Nighthawk flight was won by Darien’s 8A team in 7-1 victory over Ridgefield 8A. The Blue & Gold flight was won by Simsbury.

 

Senior Gold 10 – Greenwich 1

Senior Gold  8 – New Milford 3

Senior Gold  7 – New Fairfield 3

Senior Gold  2 – New Canaan 3

Darien 8A  3 – Senior Gold 2

 

The Senior Gold Girls had a successful day at the Rooster Rumble. After going 3-1 in the pool play, Newtown made it to the medal round semifinals to face Darien 8A.  In a back-and-forth battle, Bryanna Leblanc made save after save in the goal to keep Newtown in it. The entire Senior Gold team hustled and scrapped to tie the game at two each with three minutes left.  Darien went up 3-2 with 1:10 remaining and held on to beat the host Newtown.

Molly Mahony, Kaitlyn VosWinkel, Erin Kenning, Celeste Cheung, Kelly O’Sullivan, Andrea Sayegh, and Emily Molloy led the way in the midfield by continuously hustling to get up and down the field to wreak havoc on both the offensive and defensive ends. In the cage, Bryanna Leblanc and Emma Glasrud combined for 22 saves. The attack was led by Meredith Bridges, Julia Trudell, Alex Klien, and Meghan Harkins.  VosWinkel and Mahony hustled their way to a team high 11 groundballs each. The defense faced some of the most potent attacks in the state and all day long the defenders kept them away from the goal. The defensive effort was led by Christina Gould (10 ground balls),  Rachel Hyland, Katelyn Kean, Christina Caporale, Kelsey Karp, and Katherine Lotrecchiano.

 

Senior Blue 2  Wilton 1 – Goaltender Emma Glasrud stopped most of Wilton’s offensive strikes with six saves. Wilton scored the first goal of the game, but Paige Murphy tied the game. Taylor Reardon, Michelle Isabella, and Stephanie Perrotti  held off Wilton. With a minute left on the clock Meagan Knox picked up a ground ball to score the winner.

 

Relax 5 , Senior  Blue   3  – Senior Blue had already beaten Relax in regular season game, but this Relax team was ready for the rematch. Relax scored early in the game, but Emily Molloy and Paige Murphy helped Senior Blue battle back to tie the game at three. Then with two penalty shots on goal Relax managed to win the game. Libby DiDomizio, Liz Eiseman, and Tess Kneisel rallied to get ground balls to help the offense. Emma Glasrud had four saves in goal.

 

Ridgefield 8, Senior Blue 0 – The heat caught up to Senior Blue which could not keep up with Ridgefield’s 7 A team.

 

Senior  Blue   6  New Milford 1 – Senior Blue was determined to win its last game, with 16 of 27 players who are eighth graders playing their last youth Newtown lacrosse game. Emily Molloy came out in full force to score the first goal. New Milford tried to score but the defense, led by Katie McManus, Tess Kneisel, Michelle Isabella, Julia Clarke, Rachel Wiberg, held the opponents back. Liz Eiseman, Libby DiDomizio, Anna Hodge, Caroline Kingsley, and Olivia Phenix stopped the offensive drive by New Milford and turned over the ball to help Paige Murphy, Kelsey McEvoy, Levi Black, Mary Oliver, and Megan Knox score the win for Senior Blue.

Senior Gold 11, Darien 9 – Down 5-3 at halftime, the Senior Gold Girls battled back to win at Darien. With the game tied 8-8, Christina Gould snared three straight loose balls off the draws and fed the Newtown attack which scored each time to put the game out of reach. Bryanna LeBlanc was stellar in the goal, while the defense led by Rachel Hyland, Christina Caporale, Katherine Lottrecchiano, and Kelsey Karp made the second half adjustments they needed to slow down a potent Darien attack. The Newtown attack was led by Meredith Bridges, Kaitlin Vos Winkel, Julia Trudell, Molly Mahony, and Erin Kenning.

 

Senior Gold 9, Westport 9 – In a back-and-forth game at Westport, the Senior Gold girls tied a strong Westport squad. Bryanna Leblanc stopped nine shots in the cage. Molly Mahony and Kaitlin Vos Winkel each had four ground balls to lead the team. The midfield led by Mahony, VosWinkel, Erin Kenning, Celeste Cheung, and Kelly O’Sullivan hustled all afternoon to keep the pressure on Westport. The attack was led by Meghan Harkins, Katelyn Kean, Alex Klein, Meredith Bridges, and Julia Trudell.

 

Ridgefield 9, Senior Gold 8 (OT) – Playing in yet another tight game, the Senior Gold girls lost a tough one in overtime at Ridgefield. Ridgefield was able to control possession by getting most of the loose balls. Even though they had possession for much of the game, the Ridgefield attack was stopped repeatedly by Christina Caporale in the net (11 saves) and the Newtown defense, led by Katelyn Kean and Rachel Hyland. The attack was led by Meredith Bridges, Molly Mahony, and Julia Trudell.

 

Bantam Girls

New Canaan Jamboree – Newtown won two games and tied one at the competitive tournament. The defense was led by Michaela Hall and Julia Wiberg, each of  whom picked off three passes. Goalie duties were shared by five different girls who had 18 saves among them — Sidney DiMartino, Maddie Bridges, Claudia Morris, Cam Morris, and Celia Gold. Nikki Zaccaro and Casey Harkins led all players with eight ground balls each. The scoring attack had six different girls finding the back of the net — Brianna Sclafani, Brittany Meisenheimer, Charlotte Stenz, Nikki Zaccaro, Claudia Morris, and Casey Harkins. In league play, the girls went undefeated this season with a 7-0 record.
