Moving Violations

At about 7 am June 4, police stopped motorist William Woodworth, 50, of 19 Plumtrees Road on Hawleyville Road because the vehicle that he was driving had no front marker plate.

After investigating, police charged Woodworth with failure to display a marker plate, driving an unregistered vehicle, driving with a suspended license, and misuse of a marker plate.

Woodworth was released from custody on a written promise to appear June 24 in Danbury Superior Court.

Wrecker Crash

During the closure of Interstate 84 due to a major traffic accident there, motorist Dennis Goett, 59, of North Salem, N.Y., was driving a 2005 Toyota Prius eastward near 130 Mt Pleasant Road in heavy traffic at about 8:20 am June 4, police report.

At that time, Andrew McAllister, 43, of Katonah, N.Y., was driving a 1997 Kenworth W-900 wrecker, which is owned by Hilario’s Service Center, eastward in the westbound lane of Mt Pleasant Road and was passing eastbound traffic in a no-passing zone, police said.

The Toyota then attempted to make a left turn into a commercial driveway, after which the Toyota and the wrecker collided, police said.

There were no injuries. Police said McAllister told them that he was driving the wrecker in the opposite lane to expedite the wrecker’s response to a towing job on I-84.

Police said they verbally warned McAllister for improper passing.

Rear-Ender

During the closure of Interstate 84 due to a serious accident on the morning of June 4, traffic backed up on Mt Pleasant Road.

Near 75 Mt Pleasant Road, westbound motorist Nicole Markey, 21, of Seymour who was driving a 2007 Scion TC coupe, drove into the rear end of a westbound 2003 Kia Sedona minivan driven by motorist Mary Anne Inness, 42, of Torrington, police said.

There were no injuries. Markey received an infraction ticket for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart, police said.

Youths/Alcohol

Police said they spotted a suspicious vehicle parked in a commercial parking lot on Glen Road in Sandy Hook about 11 pm June 1, so they investigated.

Police said they found that the driver and a passenger, both of whom are under age 21, were in possession of beer inside the vehicle.

Police said they issued infractions for illegal possession of alcohol by a minor to driver Floyd Malmborg, 18, of 108 Mt Pleasant Road, and to passenger Erik Jurman, 19, of 21 Pebble Road. Those tickets carry $136 fines.

Honda Crash

Motorist Sean Gill, 16, of 10 Maple Drive was driving a 1987 Honda Civic coupe eastward on Walnut Tree Hill Road, near its intersection with Alberts Hill Road, about 2:12 pm June 4, when the auto went out of control, crossed the road and smashed into a stone wall, police report.

Gill was not injured. Police issued Gill an infraction for traveling too fast for conditions.

Rear-End Crash

During a period of traffic congestion about 11:40 am June 4, motorist Marsha Schlig, 68, of Somers, N.Y., who was driving a 2007 Honda sedan southward on Berkshire Road near Fir Tree Lane, slowed for heavy traffic and was struck from behind by southbound motorist Sumaya Hamadmad, 30, of Bethel, who was driving a 2000 Honda sedan, police report.

 There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Hamadmad for following too closely.

Flagpole Crash

A two-vehicle accident occurred at the hazardous flagpole intersection of Main Street, West Street, and Church Hill Road about 11:12 pm May 24.

Motorist Maeve Brouillard, 22, of Waterbury, who was driving a 2008 Honda Civic coupe, stopped at a stop sign on Church Hill Road and then proceeded to make a left turn onto south Main Street, when  the Honda collided with a 1997 Buick Regal driven southward on Main Street by Marion Dluzneski, 76, of Monroe, police said.

There were no injuries. Brouillard received a written warning for failure to yield the right of way, police said.

South Main Collision

Police report a two-vehicle collision on a hazardous section of South Main Street, just south of its intersection with Cold Spring Road about 5:48 pm June 3.

Motorist Andrew Bolmer, 20, of 31 Swamp Road, who was driving a 1997 Nissan Altima sedan northward on South Main Street, started to make a left turn into the driveway at Buzz’s Mobil gas station at 286 South Main Street, when the Nissan collided with a southbound 2001 Honda CRV driven by Ed Czupkowski, 37, of Monroe, according to police.

There were no injuries, police report. Bolmer received an infraction for making a restricted turn, police report.

Toyota Vs Deer

Motorist Emil Benvenuto, 76, of Old Greenwich was driving a 2004 Toyota Prius northward on Poverty Hollow Road about 6:13 pm June 8, when a deer jumped out in front of the auto, resulting in Benvenuto swerving to the right to avoid a collision, police said.

The Toyota, however, collided with two wooden fenceposts.

Neither Benvenuto nor a passenger were injured. Police took no enforcement action.

DUI Arrest

Police report that at about 1:30 am on June 7, they spotted motorist Justin Lahm, 20, of 18 Philo Curtis Road drive through a stop sign at an intersection of Mt Pleasant Road and Blackman Road, so they stopped Lahm to investigate.

After performing field sobriety tests on Lahm, police charged him with driving under the influence and with failure to obey a stop sign.

After being processed on the charges, Lahm posted $100 bail and was released for a June 24 court appearance.

MV Break-In

Sometime between 2 and 3 pm on June 6, someone forcibly entered a vehicle that was parked near an office building on Commerce Road, after which items were stolen from the vehicle, police said.

One of the vehicle’s windows was smashed to gain entry into the vehicle. The crimes committed are sixth-degree larceny and second-degree criminal mischief.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact police Officer Michael McGowan at 426-5841.

School Bus

Police report an accident involving a school bus and a SUV at the intersection of Sugar Street and Elm Drive about 7:43 am June 6.

There were no injuries. The school bus carried 11 students who attend Hawley School and Reed Intermediate School, police said.

Police said Fred Pendergast, 74, of 23 Riverside Road was driving a 2002 Bluebird school bus westward on Sugar Street, as motorist Rebecca Johnston, 41, of 168-A Brushy Hill Road was driving a 2004 Honda Pilot northward on Elm Drive. The Honda carried three child passengers.

The school bus began to make a left turn onto Elm Drive, as the Honda began to make a right turn onto Sugar Street, after which the vehicles collided, police said.

Police said they issued Pendergast a written warning for making an improper left turn.

I-84 DUI

Motorist Benny Shirindza, 30, of New Milford was driving a 1997 Volkswagen Jetta eastward on Interstate 84, near Exit 10, about 7 pm June 1, when he lost control of the auto, veered to the right and struck some metal-beam guardrailing, destroying the auto, state police said.

Shirindza was not injured. State police charged him with driving under the influence and with three other vehicular violations. Shirindza was scheduled to appear in court to answer the charges.

 

SUV Vs SUV

Police report a collision between two sport-utility vehicles on Church Hill Road about 12:26 pm June 8.

Motorist Nathan Kaufman, 19, of 37 Rosemere Drive, who was driving a 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser, was attempting to make a left turn from a driveway at 66 Church Hill Road onto westbound Church Hill Road, as motorist Megan Ward, 32, of 15 Woodbine Lane was driving a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder eastward on Church Hill Road, police said.

The two vehicles collided. There were no injuries. Police issued Kaufman a written warning for failure to grant the right of way.

Altercation

Police report an altercation between a man and a woman late on the night of June 7 at the Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company’s annual Lobsterfest event at the Riverside Road firehouse.

Police said Garrett Clark, 25, of 114 Church Hill Road, and Carly Ciaccia, 24, of 34 Botsford Hill Road became involved in a verbal dispute, which led to Clark knocking a drink out of Ciaccia’s hand, after which Ciaccia punched Clark in the face.

Ciaccia then called police to report the incident. After investigating, police issued each person an infraction ticket on a charge of creating a public disturbance. The ticket, which carries a $103 fine, is appealable in court.

DUI Charge

Police report that motorist Ashley E. Nejaime, 22, of Torrington was driving a 1996 Subaru Legacy on South Main Street about 11 pm June 10, when she made a restricted turn, so they stopped her to investigate.

After investigating, police charged Nejaime with driving under the influence and with making a restricted turn.

 Police released Nejaime from custody on $150 bail for a June 25 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Fast Driving

Police said they stopped motorist Mark Razee, 22, of Southbury, who was driving a 1996 Audi A-4 southward on Toddy Hill Road near Clearview Drive about 10 pm June 11, for exceeding the speed limit.

After investigating, police charged Razee with traveling too fast and with driving with a suspended license. Razee posted $250 bail for a June 25 court appearance.
