Camps, Camps ... And More Camps

Basketball

Rising Star Co-Ed

Rising Star Summer League basketball games start July 7. All boys and girls entering Grades six through nine are eligible to play competitive, fun-filled basketball in this league. The games will be played outdoors at Treadwell Park. Games will be played Mondays and Wednesdays in July, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays in August.

Coaches will contact players after July 4 weekend with team and schedule information. The league includes playoffs and All-Star games. All players will receive a Rising Star T-shirt.

Teams are coached and officiated by Newtown High School varsity players, some of whom participated in the league. Participants will receive equal playing time. Teams comprised of boys and girls will be made age and grade appropriate to form evenly-matched and competitive teams. Emphasis will be placed on fundamentals.

Lady Hawks Girls’ League

The Lady Hawks Girls’ Summer Basketball League is for girls entering grades six through nine. Participants will play one or two games each week in the evening at Reed Intermediate School’s outdoor court. Games will be held at 5:30 and 6:45 pm on off nights for the Rising Stars co-ed league, giving girls an opportunity to play in both leagues. The season starts Tuesday, July 8. Cost is $75.

Each girl will receive a T-shirt. Volunteer coaches needed. For information, contact coordinator Vin Harkins  at vinharkins@aol.com or by calling 426-4454.

Football

Newtown Youth Camp

Newtown’s Youth Football Camp will be held July 28 through August 1 from 9 am to noon each day. Newtown High School Head Coach  Steve George and his staff will run the camp at Hawley school. The camp is dedicated to teaching the players ages 7-13 the fundamental and basic techniques of football. All equipment will be provided except for athletic supporters/cups and cleats. Players will receive camp T-Shirts and a pizza party on the last day.

Namath-Dockery

The Joe Namath-John Dockery Instructional Football Camp will be held for the 37th year, July 6-11 at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury. The contact and non-contact camp is for boys ages 8-18. Players will be grouped according to ability, size, maturity and athletic experience. Area coaches will work with NFL stars on the field to teach attendees. Instruction will range from fundamentals to advanced skills and include drills, conditioning, training methods, weights, position play and rule interperation. Giants’ Non-Contact Camp

The New York Giants Youth Football Camp offers a non-contact program for athletes ages 6-14 at the Easton Park and Recreation facility, 336 Sport Hill Road, from July 21-25 (sessions run from 9 am to 3 pm). Sportsmanship, nutrition, teamwork, self-esteem and mental focus are emphasized. Professional educators will work with Giants heroes, including Eric Dorsey, Bill Ard, Charles Way, Sean Landeta and Sam Garnes.

Soccer

Camp Caldo

Camp Caldo, a soccer camp for boys and girls ages 6-18, will be offered at Immaculate High School in Danbury July 7-11. Cost is $149 for a half day (9 am to noon or 12:30 to 3:30 pm) and $199 for a full day (9 am to 3:30 pm). Register online at www.accaldo.com.
