SMITHSONIAN SHOWS FLEISCHMAN PAPERS w/1 cut

wd/gs set 6-13 #703198

NEW YORK CITY — “Recent Acquisitions: Selections from the Lawrence and Barbara Fleischman Paper,” on view at the Archives of American Art, New York Research Center Gallery, June 22–October 5, presents personal letters between the Fleischmans and various members of the art community, as well as letters relating to the founding of the archives.

On the occasion of John W. Smith’s appointment as director of the Archives of America Art, Barbara Fleischman, chair of the board of trustees, donated to the archives an extraordinary collection of letters from American artists, curators and critics, including Charles Burchfield, Philip Everwood, Ben Shahn, and George Grosz.

“I was humbled that Barbara would recognize my arrival at the archives with this very significant gift,” said Smith. “This remarkable trove of letters provides great insight into the personalities of these artists and also underscores the pivotal role that Barbara and Larry Fleischman played in nurturing their careers, as both collectors and as trusted friends. It’s wonderful that this material will now be available to the public.”

The Archives of American Art is dedicated to the collection, preservation and study of papers and other primary records of this history of the visual arts in America. Its collections, comprising 16 millions items, are one of the world’s largest single sources for such information.

The Archives of American Art, New York Regional Center Gallery is on the lobby level of the UBS building, 1285 Avenue of the Americas, between 51st and 52nd Streets. For information, 212-399-2902 or www.aaa.si.edu.
