People glided across Lake Zoar Saturday, June, 4 during a free introduction to stand-up paddling organized by Newtown Parks and Recreation and Pura Vida Fitness and Paddling.

Stacy Lawless, the founder of Pura Vida Fitness and Paddling, provided participants with paddleboards, life preservers and a basic understanding of how to work their way across the water.

Lawless said she contacted Newtown Parks and Recreation as a way to drum up business since the activity "hasn't really caught on up here in the Northeast." She added that if participants have a feel for it, they could take a private lesson with her to improve their skills.

Pura Vida Fitness and Paddling offers private and group sessions in which the equipment is brought to the customer and Lawless gives instruction. The company is also partnering with Newtown Parks and Recreation throughout the summer for stand-up paddling classes on Lake Lillinonah. The price is $150 per person for three classes, and the first is on Tuesday, June 14.

Lawless said stand-up paddling is relaxing but also good exercise.

"I was out for three hours the other day, just chilling," she said. "But you can also get a work out with it."

More information about Parks and Recreation's summer offerings is available on its website, at newtown-ct.gov.
