NEW HAVEN — With the arrests of three more men on June 4, a drug trafficking ring allegedly headed by a former Newtown police sergeant has grown to 11 men, who are now under federal indictment on various drug charges.

Also, new court documents expand the period during which the former Newtown police sergeant and a former Newtown civilian emergency services dispatcher were allegedly involved in drug trafficking, increasing it from four years to six years.

The drug ring was allegedly engaged in illegal anabolic steroid distribution.

Deirdre M. Daly, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, said in a statement that a federal grand jury in New Haven has returned a “superseding indictment” charging the 11 men.

Eight of the men listed in the superseding indictment were arrested in late April and were named in the initial indictment in May.

According to allegations contained in court documents and statements made in court, a long-term investigation led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Drug Enforcement Administration, and Homeland Security Investigations indicates that former Newtown police sergeant Steven Santucci, 38, of Waterbury was receiving shipments of steroid ingredients from China and manufacturing and distributing wholesale quantities of steroids.

Also named in the superseding indictment is Jason Chickos, 46, of Bridgeport, who formerly worked as a Newtown emergency services radio dispatcher.

Both Santucci and Chickos resigned from their jobs following their arrests. They are each charged with one count of conspiracy to distribute and to possess with intent to distribute anabolic steroids. That offense carries a maximum penalty of ten years in prison and a fine of up to $500,000.

The indictment also charges Santucci with six separate counts of possession with intent to distribute and distribution of anabolic steroids. That offense carries the same penalties.

Additionally, the indictment charges Santucci with conspiracy to launder money. That offense carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $500,000.

The initial indictment stated that the alleged criminal activity for which Santucci and Chickos were charged occurred from April 2011 to April 2015. The superseding indictment expands that time period to April 2009 to April 2015.

Both Santucci and Chickos are free on bond. They have pleaded not guilty to all charges and are awaiting trial.

The three men arrested on June 4 on drug charges are Guido Volpe, 36, of Prospect; John Koch, 48, of Coventry; and Louis Borrero, 52, of Ansonia, according to a spokesman for the US Attorney.

Other men who have been charged in the case are: Alex Kenyhercz, 28, of Ansonia; Mark Bertanza, 33, of Shelton; Frank Pecora, 53, of Derby; Jeffrey Gentile, 33, of Ansonia; Steven Fernandes, 54, of Southington; and Michael D. Mase, 32, of Sherman.

During the course of the investigation, law enforcement officers seized hundreds of vials of steroids, approximately 600 grams of raw testosterone powder, approximately 350 grams of powder cocaine, and four long guns, according to Ms Daly.
