Boys’ Tennis Tourney Results

Newtown High School’s boys’ tennis team results in the Class LL state tournament are as follows: In Saturday’s opening round, Adam Wenick defeated Ryan Hanley of Cheshire, 6-2, 6-3, and Evan Batzer defeated Josh Rubinstein of Trumbull by default. Timo Roehrs lost to Windsor’s Tim Nguyen, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, after coming back from a 4-1 deficit to win the first set. Wenick and Batzer both lost in the second round on Monday.

All three doubles teams were eliminated from the state tournament on Sunday, although two advanced past the first round. Casey Tenney and Joe Cappiello beat Hamden’s number one doubles team of Alex Winnick and Kevin Hochstrasser, 6-1, 7-5, before losing in the round of 16 to the top-seeded team of Tom O’Brien and Jason Ottomano (perennial powerhouse Fairfield Prep) 6-1, 6-0. Colin Jacob and Connor Howell beat Alex Gonzales and Mike Arasimowicz (New Britain) 6-1, 6-2, then lost to the sixth seed, Simsbury’s Frederick Kerr and Max Savarese, 7-5, 6-1. The first 11 games of the first set went on service. Rob Beier and Rich Andreotta rallied from a 5-1 second set deficit but ultimately lost to the Staples duo, Kevin Macdonald and Sam Hickok, 6-2, 6-3.
