On Saturday, June 20, the Danbury Westerners are teaming up with The Danbury Museum & Historical Society to bring the city a day of old-fashioned, family fun at Rogers Park.
In celebration of the Westernerâs 15th Anniversary as Danburyâs hometown NECBL team, the day starts with a free Westerners Kids Clinic from 9 am to noon. Boys and girls will receive instruction from players and coaches. A baseball history station will offer a glimpse of how the game was played during late 1800s. Pizza lunch, beverages and a souvenir t-shirt will be provided. The clinic is open to children of area children ages 7 to 12 and Amber Alert registration will be offered to all participants. Register your child by calling 203-788-3408.
At 2:30 pm, catch the Danbury Westerners vs The Lowell All Americans. This New England Collegiate Baseball League game will feature some of Americaâs best young pro prospect players. Team founders and Westerners alumni will be honored after the game.
At 6:30 pm the Newtown Sandy Hooks (the first vintage team formed in Fairfield County) take on The Bridgeport Orators. Players will follow 1886 rules of the game, don authentic period uniforms and use replica equipment.
Travel back to the 19th century when parasols and petticoats, bottles of birch beer and handlebar moustaches were all part of the game. Pack a picnic, drink an iced cold sarsaparilla, enjoy the sounds of a barbershop quartet, and enter the potato sack race.
Admission is $5 and children may attend for free.
