NEW BRITAIN – Athletes from more than 120 high schools converged on Willowbrook Park in New Britain last week for the girls’ and boys’ CIAC State Open track championships and amidst all the controlled chaos were a few fine performances from Newtown High School representatives.

For the girls, the 4x800 relay team – which finished second at the South-West Conference meet, fourth at the CIAC Class L meet, and now owns a NHS record – was 14th overall in 10:14.46, about 42 seconds behind front-running Woodstock Academy.

In the 400 meter dash, Allison Frobey was 17th overall in 1:02.71, fewer than five seconds behind first-place finisher Dominique Curtis of Hillhouse High School. In the 1,600 meters, Brittney Rayzor was 8th overall in 5:22.67, fewer than 16 seconds behind first-place finisher Meghan Owen of Killingly High School. And in the discus, Whitney Blanchard was 9th overall with a toss of 103-5, about 33 feet shorter than Karen Wyzykowski of Old Saybrook threw for first place.

For the boys, Kyle Tobin continued his sensational season (which includes two SWC championships and a second-place finish in the CIAC Class L meet) with an 11th-place finish in the 110 meter high hurdles. He ran 15.65, less than a second behind Michael Ramos of Bridgeport Central.

And the 4x400 relay team finished 14th overall in 3:32.17, fewer than nine seconds behind first-place Wilbur Cross. But nevertheless, it is still a new school record.
