Newtown Bridge Club will host workshops in modern bridge basics for bridge players on Mondays from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at Edmond Town Hall, 45 Main Street in Newtown, beginning June 15.

June workshops include Opening the Bidding (June 15), Major Suit Fits (June 22), and 1 Notrump Bids and Basic Responses (June 29).

Seven more workshops are scheduled through August 17. Additional topics will include Overcalls, Takeout Doubles, Rebids by Opener and Responder, Preempts, 2-Club Opening Bids, Opening Measly Minor Suits, and Jacoby Transfers.

“Bridge experts agree that bidding is the most important aspect of the game,” said club manager Susan Fronapfel, who will present the workshops. “If you and your partner consistently bid to the right contract, you have a significant competitive edge.”

Players are welcome to come to workshops alone or with their bridge partners. Each workshop consists of a brief lesson followed by play and discussion of hands related to the session’s topic. The material is appropriate for social bridge players and newer duplicate bridge players.

Tuition is $10 per workshop ($8 for Newtown Bridge Club members). Light refreshments will be provided.

Additional workshops are planned for the fall, to be offered twice monthly September through November. Those workshops will cover Opening Leads (September 21), Ruffing (September 28), Long Shots (October 19), Negtive Doubles (October 26), Rules of 11 (November 2) and Getting To Game (November 9). These, like the spring programs, will also be available as standalones or as a series.

To register, email director@newtownbridge.org or call 203-733-8525. For more information, visit .www.newtownbridge.org

Newtown Bridge Club is affiliated with the American Contract Bridge League (ACBL). The club holds four ACBL-sanctioned duplicate bridge games each week: Mondays at 1 pm, Tuesdays at 10 am and 7 pm, and Wednesdays at 10 am.

Games are played in the Alexandria Room at Edmond Town Hall. All bridge players are welcome.
