‘IMPRESSIONIST NEW YORK’ LECTURE AT PHILLIPS COLLECTION JULY 12

AVV 6-4 #702123

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Phillips Collection will present a lecture, “Impressionist New York,” on Thursday, July 12, at 6:30 pm.

American artists rarely painted cityscapes before Impressionism became the dominant aesthetic of American art in the late Nineteenth Century. Dr William H. Gerdts, professor emeritus of art history, Graduate School of the City University of New York, will consider how the city imagery created by French Impressionists inspired American painters such as Childe Hassam and Colin Campbell Cooper to take on the subject of New York in their work.

Following the lecture, Gerdts, who contributed essays to American Impressionists: Painters of Light and the Modern Landscape, will sign copies of the book in the museum shop.

The Phillips Collection is at 1600 21st Street NW. For information, 202-387-2151 or www.phillipscollection.org.
