Sandy Hook Students Embrace Olympic Spirit At Field Day

On June 3, in honor of this year’s Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, Sandy Hook Elementary School held a special field day celebration with a distinctive Olympic theme. Students in grades one through four participated.

During the days preceding the event, students created banners representing countries from around the world. They also studied Olympic history and sang related songs.

Physical education teachers Pam Lupo and Jan Huot, as well as numerous parent volunteers, coordinated the various Field Day events.

The Opening Ceremony was considered by many faculty, parents, and students to be the day’s highlight. Retiring teachers George Stockwell, math instructor, and Deborah Stakel, special education instructor, lead the group into the Pledge of Allegiance. Eight students, preselected based on their performance during the recent one-mile fitness test, were given the honor of participating in a special relay race ending with a symbolic lighting of the torch.

The PTA made the medals for winning students.

“Learning from the success of this field day, we believe it will be possible to include kindergarteners for part of our future field days,” said Sandy Hook School Principal Donna Pagé. “But one thing is for certain; it was a day to be cherished and remembered!”
