It wouldn’t be a Newtown Rockin’ Rooster Run if Sergio Ribeiro wasn’t crossing the finish line first, would it?

When Brian McGovern of Newtown out-paced Ribeiro two years ago, it seemed so unusual. But Ribeiro returned to the winner’s circle last year and made it back-to-back titles last Saturday with a 16:01 finish.

But Ribeiro was pushed pretty hard by Dan Shea.

“We got to the mile and (Sergio) just pulled away,” said Shea, who last won the Rooster Run some 11 years ago. “I’m much better up hill and thought I could catch him (heading up Wasserman Way) but I just didn’t have it.”

Shea finished second at 16:16 with Alister Ratcliff (first in the high school division) coming in third overall at 17:03. Claudia Camargo was the first female finisher (and fourth overall) at 17:21 in a race that saw its largest number of participants (254) ever.

“This is a great race,” said Shea. “The people who organize it are great. This race started the golden age of running in this town and it looks like it’s really coming back. It’s nice top see all the people who have come out, I guess, in record numbers.”

Daniel Maxwell (male 20-29), Ken Rodbell (male 40-49), Rebecca Steinkraus (female 40-49), Scott Schwarz (male 50-59), Carolyn Brennan (female high school), Johanna Francis (female 20-29) and Gail Villani (female 60-69) were the top finishers in their divisions.

Michael Cloonan, 6, was the youngest runner to cross the finish line, coming in 228th overall at 41:52.
