Brennan Wins Scholarship
Carolyn Brennan, Newtown High Schoolâs Valedictorian for the Class of 2004, was recently named a recipient of a National Honor Society Scholarship sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Approximately 200 National Honor Society winners were chosen from among the more than 8,000 applicants. As a national winner, Carolyn will receive a $1,000 scholarship towards her education at Princeton University this fall.
Winners were selected on the basis of their leadership skills, participation in service organizations and clubs, achievements in the arts and sciences, employment experience, and academic record. They were also required to write an essay.
âWe are proud to recognize Carolyn, who has demonstrated not only academic excellence, but also excellence in service, leadership, character, and citizenship,â said Gerald N. Tirozzi, executive director of the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
âCarolyn is a highly gifted and talented student,â noted Principal Bill Manfredonia. âShe always challenges herself to improve and achieve high standards in her academics, athletics, and music. Carolyn is a clear role model for her ability to be involved in a number of activities and be highly successful in all.â
The National Honor Society and the National Junior Honor Society are the nationâs premier organizations recognizing outstanding middle and high school students who demonstrate excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Both are sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals, which also sponsors the National Association of Student Councils (NASC), which promotes and provides leadership development opportunities to prepare and empower students to serve in their schools and communities.
