Smith, Fuori First Statewide In Competitive Curling

Newtown High School freshman Grandon Smith and senior Austin Fuori were honored with their teammates for winning first place in the Connecticut High School Curling Championship at a season-ending banquet in late May.

The banquet was held, at Volo Aviation at Sikorsky Airport in Stratford, by the Nutmeg Curling Club. Against an incredible backdrop of corporate jets and classic cars, part of the Wings and Wheels Exhibition, Smith and Fuori received their trophies, along with a team hardware, which will remain on display at the Nutmeg Curling Club facility at Wonderland Of Ice in Bridgeport.

Curling, a game of strategy and teamwork, dates back to the 16th century and has been an official sport in the Winter Olympic Games since 1998. Curling continues to grow in popularity and is played all over Europe, Australia, China, Japan, Korea, and New Zealand.
