Robin C. Baranowski, formerly of Newtown and daughter of Toni Baranowski of Southbury and Stephen Baranowski of Woodbury, graduated with a bachelor of science degree in wildlife conservation biology from the University of Rhode Island, Kingston, on Sunday, May 22. During the last two years, Robin also worked as a Northeast coastal and barrier biological science technician for the National Parks Service at URIâs campus.
Sarah Bonacci and John OâBrien of Newtown, and Kerry McDonald and Joseph Rahtelli of Sandy Hook graduated from Marist College, Poughkeepsie, NY, at the end of May, according to the college.
Drew University, Madison, N.J., student and Newtown resident Jennifer K. Nikola has been named to the Deanâs List for the spring semester. To qualify, students must earn a grade point average of 3.4 or above, which is equivalent to a B+ or better. Jennifer also graduated from the university with a bachelor of arts degree on May 14, during the universityâs commencement ceremony.
The Connecticut Fire Academy hosted its graduation ceremony for Recruitment Class 47 on May 19. A class of 41 firefighters, representing 20 towns across the state, completed a 14-week, residential-based training program that had begun on February 8. Among the roster of firefighters in the class was Derek S. Currao of Sandy Hook. A formal ceremony was held at Manchester Community College, with Westport Fire Department Chief Christopher Ackley serving as the keynote speaker. Recruits underwent daily training at the Connecticut Fire Academy campus in Windsor Locks focusing on developing knowledge, skills, and abilities needed for entry level firefighters. Core program components establish self-discipline, teamwork, company morale, orderliness, and precision. Training consisted of theory backed with extensive skill development. Additional course components included training in hazardous materials mitigation, weapons of mass destruction preparedness, confined space rescue, CPR defibrillator, and technical rescue. Graduating recruits are nationally certified to the level of Firefighter I and Firefighter II in additional to certification in specialized training.
Air National Guard Airman Alexander T. Miller graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. He is the son of Timothy and Nancy Miller of Sandy Hook. Alexander graduated in 2010 from Newtown High School.
Jeffrey Louis Davis graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in economics during the 141st Commencement ceremony May 21 at McDaniel College, Westminster, Md.
Mary Gover of Newtown earned a bachelor of arts degree in psychology and Rasul Hafizov of Sandy Hook earned a bachelor of arts in economics from Connecticut College, New London, on May 22.
Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester, Mass., announced that Robert Morlath of Sandy Hook, a junior majoring in aerospace engineering at the university, was named to the universityâs Deanâs List for academic excellence for the spring semester.
 Scott Regnery graduated on May 8 from Ohio Wesleyan University, Delaware, Ohio, during its 167th commencement ceremony. Scott earned a bachelor of arts degree. Regnery also attended Newtown High School.
Allen Hubbard, son of Nancie and Allen Hubbard of Newtown was named to the Deanâs List for the spring semester at Saint Michaelâs College, Burlington, Vt. Allen is a senior biology major at the college. Students who complete a minimum of 12 credits and achieve a grade point average of at least 3.4 at the end of a semester are recognized for their scholarship by inclusion on the Deanâs List.
 Charles S. Spath of Sandy Hook, a junior geology major, has been named to the Presidentâs List for the spring semester at SUNY Oswego, N.Y. The Presidentâs and Deansâ lists represent the academic top 25.4 percent of the Oswego student body. Students who achieve grade averages of 3.80 and above on the 4.00 scale are named to the Presidentâs List, the top 6.5 percent of Oswego students.
Evan Victor Gregoire, son of Frederica and Mark Gregoire of Sandy Hook, graduated from Dickinson College, Carlisle, Penn., on May 22 with a bachelor of the arts degrees in international business and management and English. He was also on the Deanâs List. Evan is a graduate of Newtown High School.
Rachel Bolinsky, who completed her junior year at the University of Connecticut, Storrs, in May, earned recognition on both the fall and spring semesters Deanâs List. Rachel is a 2008 graduate of Newtown High School. After her scheduled 2012 graduation from the university, Rachel plans to continue postgraduate work in clinical psychology. She was recognized for her outstanding academic performance by the universityâs Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in five of her first six semesters.
Sandy Hook residents Ryan Clark, Christian Del Rossi, Colleen Murphy, Veronica Parsloe, and Jonathan Smolen were named to the Deanâs List at the University of New Haven, West Haven, for the spring semester. Full-time undergraduate students must have a 3.50 or better cumulative grade point average for the semester to be eligible for the Deanâs List.
Daniel C. Bunger, son of Katherine and Gregory Bunger of Newtown, received a bachelor of arts degree from Hamilton College, Clinton, N.Y., on Sunday, May 22. Daniel graduated cum laude with a degree in economics.
Shane McCarthy of Newtown graduated cum laude from the American Universityâs School of International Service, Washington, D.C. Shane earned his bachelor of arts degree in international studies with a minor in economics.
Matthew Douglas, son of Aila and Jeff Douglas of Newtown, was named to the Deanâs List for the fall, winter, and quarters at Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, N.Y. Matthew is a second year student at the institute and is studying in the mechanical engineering. Matthew is a 2009 graduate of Newtown High School.
Kevin Carney, son of Jeanne and Chris Carney of Sandy Hook, was named to the Deanâs List for outstanding academic achievement during the spring semester of his freshman year at St Johnâs University, Queens, N.Y. Kevin is majoring in finance at the university.
