Click-It Or Ticket Project Nets Dozens of Violations
During a 14-day period from May 23, to June 5, town police joined police from across the nation in the Click-It or Ticket seatbelt usage enforcement campaign, a project designed to maximize mandatory seatbelt use by motorists.
During the semiannual project, police increased their patrols, participated in a regional enforcement task force, conducted special DUI patrols, and held seatbelt checkpoints.
The Click-It or Ticket enforcement project resulted in 51 infractions and 21 warnings for failure to wear a seatbelt; one infraction for a child safety seat violation; three drunken driving arrests; 15 infractions and 77 warnings for speeding; and 80 infractions and 54 warnings for miscellaneous motor vehicle violations, police said.
The regional task force included police from Newtown, Brookfield, Bethel, and Redding, who spent five hours in each of the four towns as part of a group enforcement project. The regional project received grant financing.
Police estimate that about 90 percent of motorists on local roads are using their seatbelts.
