WHF Appeals

For Tsunami Relief Help

The people of Acheh, Indonesia, are still dying and suffering from water-borne and waste-related diseases in the aftermath of the recent natural disaster.

World Help Foundation is a 501(c)(3) public charity, founded in Newtown several years ago, that is involved bringing water purification equipment — and soon, sanitation — to locations worldwide that are desperately in need of help.

WHF carries out both relief and developmental operations. In response to the tsunami, World Help Foundation is working together with local Rotary clubs and clubs from Kuala Lumpur, Indonesia, to provide ten Disaster Relief Systems (DRSs) that will provide safe water for more than 30,000 people per day.

The equipment will be used eight hours daily, according to Mary K. Taurus, WHF chief executive officer. Each user can draw up two gallons of water, so 60,000 gallons can be produced by this equipment each day, she said.

It takes $7 to deliver one gallon of water by transport from the USA to Indonesia. This means that water valuing $440,000 can be provided on site by this equipment daily. These users will take water to their homes, so potentially more than 150,000 people could benefit daily, according to Ms Taurus.

Different people may come on different days, so even more could be reached with life-essential water. Conservation and hygiene messages will be delivered as the users draw their water and will be incorporated into those messages delivered from health clinics and schools.

“These facilities are being rebuilt by Rotary. They are looking to us for the water,” Ms Taurus said.

“The equipment is needed urgently,” Ms Taurus said. “It will operate for two years while the people plan for more permanent solutions. There are local water engineers involved who will oversee installation and maintenance of this equipment.”

Ms Taurus appealed for the public to contribute funds so that the WHF can complete the ten DRSs.

“We already have half of the money needed to complete them and also the money to ship them,” she said. “We need to raise another $3,000 and trust that you will want to be a part of this incredible blessing — one that will bless you and your family as well. “

Tax-deductible contributions can be made by check payable to World Help Foundation and sent to PO Box 500, Newtown, CT 06470. Write “tsunami relief” in the memo line of the check. Donors will receive and an acknowledgement for their contributions, one that can be used for tax exemption purposes.

For more information, Ms Taurus can be reached at 798-0833.
