Volunteers Needed To Help
Restore Stream Banks
The Candlewood Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited will be conducting a stream bank restoration and improvement project from Monday, June 13, through Thursday, June 16. The project is part of an Embrace-A-Stream grant awarded the local Trout Unlimited chapter, and the work will also help fulfill the townâs obligation to mitigate effects of a recent oil spill on Newtownâs local stream system and natural trout hatchery.
Trout Unlimited chapter members from the greater Danbury area will be working alongside the volunteers to repair banks along Deep Brook and the Pootatuck River in the Wild Trout Management Area. Their purpose is to control erosion and preserve the integrity of the section of Deep Brook and the Pootatuck where trout may continue to successfully reproduce.
Work begins at 8 am and continues to 4 pm each day, and all activities will be staged from 24 Commerce Road across from the Newtown Water Treatment Facility. Volunteers are welcome to join the effort for all or any part of the four scheduled work days. Volunteers should bring gloves, boots, and waders if possible as some work will be in the water. Other tools, such as rakes, shovels, lopping shears, hammers, and saws would be of use as well.
Seriously inclement weather will mean rescheduling of the event from Monday, June 20, to Thursday, June 23. For further information, call James Belden at 426-6039 or 313-5240.
