Occupation: I worked in New York City in the paper industry for more than 45 years, 40 of which were with the Websource division of Unisource Worldwide, a very large paper distribution company. Most of my career was in sales, but in my last eight or nine years at Websource, I was involved in several senior management positions. In 1999, I retired from Websource and joined a small privately held paper broker called Strategic Paper Group that supplies paper primarily to the book and magazine publishing communities as well as the catalog industry. I dealt with the book publishing side of the business and worked with many nationally known publishers and book manufacturers, such as Random House, Time-Warner, Simon & Schuster, and RR Donnelley. In January of 2005, I retired from the paper industry. I am about to embark on a new career in the real estate business and have just completed the 60 hours of class required to obtain a Connecticut real estate sales license. At this point, I am very interested in the commercial side of the business because I believe my previous business experience will be an asset.
How Long In Newtown: We lived in Redding for 18 years and moved to Newtown two and a half years ago when we bought a historic house in Sandy Hook that we fell in love with. Itâs the Benjamin Curtis House at the intersection of Glen Road and Walnut Tree Hill. Iâm sure many of our neighbors have noticed âThe Great Wallâ we erected around the property to give us a sense of privacy.
What Appealed Most To You About Newtown: It has a very good sense of community and you can be involved ââ or not ââ as much as you want. At first we were a little overwhelmed at the sheer size of the town, and we are always finding new places here that we didnât know about. I also like that itâs still kind of rural despite all the growth.
Family: My wife Jean and I both have grown children and grandchildren. Iâd like to explain that the reason Iâm named Lincoln is my great-grandfather was in the Civil War in the New York regiment, and he was a great admirer of President Lincoln. Ever since, thereâs always been a son named Lincoln. My son Lincoln IV lives in Norwalk.
Hobbies: We collect 18th Century American furniture and decorative arts with most of the focus on New England and especially Connecticut. My wife and I have been antiques dealers for about 35 years and I am presently on the board of directors of The Antiques Dealers Association of America.
Pets: We love dogs, but we lost our Lhasa apso (LuLu) four years ago to old age and find it difficult to get another dog. Maybe someday.
Favorite Books: I read mostly fiction, mysteries and such, but I do enjoy history. I liked David McCulloughâs John Adams and would like to read his book The Bridge about the Brooklyn Bridge. I just finished The Island At The Center Of The World by Russell Shorto. It was published last year by Doubleday and I supplied the paper for it. It is a wonderful story about the first Dutch settlers of Manhattan and although many historians have forgotten them, the Dutch people made a significant contribution to our American way of life. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves American history.
Organizations: I am a member of the Lions Club of Newtown and of the Newtown Historical Society, where I was recently elected president for 2005-06.
Favorite Vacation Spot: We donât get a chance to do that much traveling, but we love the Maine coast above Portland and we also like England very much.
Personal Philosophy: I guess you can tell Iâm eager to get out in the world and do things even though I retired twice. I like people and I like the interaction that working offers me.
