HARTFORD – The Greater Hartford Jaycees announced that 2005 PGA Tour winners Kenny Perry, Tim Petrovic and Geoff Ogilvy have committed to play in the 2005 Buick Championship scheduled for August 22-28 at the TPC at River Highlands in Cromwell, CT.

Perry, a 2004 US Ryder Cup team member and currently fifth on the PGA Tour money list with earnings of $2,411,063, has won twice in 2005, at the Bay Hill Invitational Presented by MasterCard and the Bank of America Colonial.

Ogilvy picked up his first PGA Tour win earlier this year at the Chrysler Classic of Tucson.

Petrovic, a native of South Glastonbury, was also a first time winner on Tour with his victory at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and is currently 16th on the money list with $1,363,425.

Joe Ogilvie, currently 14th on the money list with $1,490,022 in earnings, also committed to play.

“This will be Kenny Perry’s 17th appearance in Hartford,” said tournament chairman Larry Wilder, “and we’re appreciative of his support for this event over the years. With Tim Petrovic’s local connection to South Glastonbury as well as being a University of Hartford graduate, he brings an excitement to our field that the Hartford community will come out and support.”

Kenny Perry won back-to-back events in 2003 at the Colonial Invitational and the Memorial Tournament to propel him to seventh on the money list with over $2.8 million. In addition to those wins in 2003 he tied for second at Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Invitational and finished tied for third at the 2003 U.S. Open. In 2004, Perry earned just under $2 million, and finished tied for third at The Players Championship.

Perry has already notched two victories in 2005, with wins at the Bay Hill Invitational Presented by MasterCard and the Bank of America Colonial. Perry’s best finish in Hartford was in 2003 when he tied for fourth.

The Buick Championship is one of the PGA Tour’s best attended events, having averaged more than 250,000 spectators annually over the last 10 years. The Tournament has raised more than $24 million for Hartford area charities since it’s inception in 1952. It is the sole fundraiser of the Greater Hartford Jaycees, who channel those funds back into the community to improve the lives of those most in need by feeding the hungry, building affordable housing, helping children and much more.

Jack Friel Memorial

The 13th annual Jack Friel Memorial Golf Scramble to benefit the Newtown Scholarship Association will be held Monday, June 20, at Whitney Farms in Monroe. Check-in, registration, and warm up will begin at 10:30 am with a shotgun start at 11:30 am.

The event is sponsored by Newtown Savings Bank.

The tournament entry fee of $175 per person includes lunch, cocktails, and buffet dinner. For those wishing to attend dinner only, the cost is $50. Team handicaps will be used and plenty of great prizes will be awarded, including low gross and low net scores.

The golf tournament is a major fundraiser for the Newtown Scholarship Association (NSA), which provides need-based scholarships to college-bound high school graduates and continuing students. Since its founding in 1937 to promote and advance the education of students residing in Newtown, the NSA has awarded over $2 million in scholarships. This year the NSA received three times as many applications as in 2004, and interviewed that many more students. It is anticipated that awards in 2005 will be double those given out last year.

In addition to Newtown Savings Bank, event sponsors include, among others, Rose and Kiernan; JP Maquire; Savings Bank of Danbury; Union Savings Bank; GE Capital; Beardsley, Brown, and Bassett; People’s Bank; and Caldwell and Walsh.
