For Town Clerk, June Is Dog License Month

When asked about the level of traffic being generated by residents coming in to renew dog licenses, town clerkâs office staffers practically turn into stand-up comedians.
âI think weâll have to put a muzzle on that comment,â shouted one.
âThings are really going to the dogs lately,â said another.
âOh, throw the poor guy a boneâ¦,â another asserted.
But seriously, folks, if you own a dog you had better head to town hall because here in Connecticut, June is dog license month.
Town Clerk Cindy Simon told The Bee Monday that Newtown dog owners whose dogs are six months of age and over must be licensed annually during the month of June.
âThe new [2005] licenses are now available at the town clerkâs office, Monday through Friday, 8 am to 4:30 pm,â she said.
Anyone looking to make their pooch legal should know that the State of Connecticut requires all dogs to have rabies vaccinations.
âWhen licensing a dog it will be necessary to present a current rabies vaccination certificate,â Ms Simon advised. âAnd if someone is licensing a dog for the first time, they can present a spaying or neutering certificate to obtain a discounted license fee.â
She said fees are $8 for a neutered male or spayed female and $19 for others.
For residentsâ convenience, Ms Simon said dog licenses may be ordered by mail by sending a self-addressed stamped envelope with a check or money order for the proper amount and copies the following information: rabies certificate, spay or neuter certificate, ownerâs name, phone number, address, dogâs name, breed, age of dog, color markings, and sex of dog.
âYou can also send in or bring in a self-addressed stamped envelope to have a reminder sent to you next year at this time,â she said.
To make it a more entertaining experience, the Newtown town clerkâs office has revived a popular promotion for dog owners. During the first week of July, Ms Simon will be drawing a license from all those that have registered through June 30.
âThe name we draw will be the #1 Dog of Newtown,â she said.
Besides the esteemed title, the winning K-9âs owner will receive a prize package of dog-related treats and toys contributed by town clerkâs office members and local businesses.
âIf you want to have Newtownâs #1 dog, be sure to get your dog licensed during June,â Ms Simon said.
Local dog owners with questions or anyone requiring further information may call the town clerkâs office at 270-4210.
