Congratulations to the NHS drama students! Newtown High School took home two awards from the Connecticut High School Musical Theater Awards, which were announced at The Palace Theater in Waterbury on June 5, during a "black tie gala." Student Julia Bogdanoff earned Outstanding Leading Actress for her role as Eva Perón in Evita, and student Joseph Verga earned Outstanding Leading Actor for his role as Ché.from Dead Man's Curve, overlooking Homestead Lane near the railroad tracks. A first-time event, Newtown Food Truck Fest will be presented at Fairfield Hills next Saturday from 11 am until 5 pm. There will be at least 20 food trucks, craft beer, live music, a tag sale area, kids' activities, and local vendors. A message from the town clerk's office reminds all dog owners in town that it is that time of the year: all dogs (but no cats) over the age of 6 months must be licensed on or before June 30. The license is valid from July 1 through June 30 of next year. Licenses will not be issued without proof of current rabies vaccination. Please provide proof that the dog has been neutered or spayed so that you can get the bargain rate for a neutered/spayed dog of just $8; the fee for an unaltered dog is $19. There is a $1 late fee, per month, after June 30. New to town? Bring that Connecticut town's current license to the town clerk's office at 3 Primrose Street in Fairfield Hills. For a $1 fee, you will receive a Newtown dog license and a new tag number. (If Fido loses his tag, don't fret; it can be replaced for a fee of 50 cents.)

Gardeners who love extraordinary, unusual plants must hurry on over to Fairfield Hills this Saturday, June 10. Taunton Press's Fine Gardening magazine is hosting a "Super Cool Plant Sale," from 9 am to 3 pm. It's open to the public and free - unless you're an early bird. From 8 to 9 am, there is a $10 entrance fee. All plants are selected by Fine Gardening staff, and Broken Arrow Nursery and Opus Plants will be on hand with some pretty amazing items.

Anyone who is as curious as a cat about all the digging and sidewalk work going on in Sandy Hook center should know that, according to SHOP President Michael Burton, the work is part of repairs that are being covered by an insurance claim by the town following a raging car fire last year that did damage to both the bridge and sidewalk surface. Crews are also taking advantage of the opportunity to pull up and replace some additional pieces of the sidewalk that have been deteriorating from heavy concentrations of snow melt chemicals. That work is also being done under an existing sidewalk maintenance budget, Mr Burton said, so there is no additional cost to taxpayers for any of the work that was happening in the area of the Pootatuck bridge about a week ago.

Another bit of action you may notice is the seeding of the High Meadow at Fairfield Hills. Working with DEEP, the Conservation Commission plans to sow wildflower and grass seeds on that plot in the coming week. Providing an environment that is beneficial to pollinators, birds, and wildlife is the goal of the commission - and visitors to the area will reap the benefits of the beauty when the flowers bloom and the grasses grow, as well.

You've got your ticket for the 30th Annual Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company LobsterFest, right? The annual fundraising feast takes place this Friday evening, from 5 to 9 pm, and Saturday, from 4 to 9 pm, at the main station, 18-20 Riverside Road. Chow down on a full lobster (or steak) dinner and plenty of sides. Tickets are $25 until noon on Friday, available at the Riverside Road fire station, the fire marshal's office in the Municipal Center, and at the Newtown Bee office. Tickets are $27 at the door. For an additional fee, a raw bar and desserts can help fill you up, and there will be entertainment both nights. Bring your bibs!

Newtown High School celebrates graduation on Tuesday, June 13. Congratulations to these amazing students. Newtown Middle School eighth graders will "move up" in ceremonies the following night. Best wishes to them as they continue learning at the next level. The private schools around town are also moving students on, and all of these students are wished the best for continued success.
