Richard W. Andrews, Sr, 90, died after a brief illness, June 6, at his Newtown home, surrounded by his family.

He was born in Sandy Hook, November 12, 1923, the son of Georgie Northrop Andrews and Lewis V. Andrews, Sr.

He graduated Newtown High School in 1942. He attended college in North Carolina at Chapel Hill and served in the US Army 106th Division, Canon Company, 424th Infantry Regiment. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was captured by the Wehrmacht on December 16, 1944. He was transported by train to Stalag 12A, Luckenwalde, Germany, and was imprisoned there until May 6, 1945.

Mr Andrews was awarded two Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star for his military service.

Upon returning from the Army, he attended Henry Abbott Technical School for carpentry and founded A+S Builders with his partner, Eugene Spencer. Together, they built 200 houses, and the Sandy Hook Volunteer Firehouse and substation. He was a member of the volunteer fire company for over 60 years.

His wife of 67 years, Louise Ingram Andrews; his son, Richard Andrews and wife, Barbara, of Newtown and their children Richard Andrews III and Kimberly Andrews; his daughter Patricia Murray and son-in law, Steve, of Bethlehem and their children Mike and Jared Sturges and Gardner Murrray survive Mr Andrews.

Friends may call at Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street in Newtown, on Tuesday, June 10, from 6 to 8 pm. The funeral service will be held at Honan Funeral Home, Wednesday, June 11, from 10 to 11 am. Interment with military honors will follow in St Rose Cemetery.
