Galapagos Slide Lecture, Optional Dinner,

June 20 At Kellogg Center

DERBY — The Naugatuck Valley Audubon Society in cooperation with the Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) Kellogg Environmental Center will host a program on Tuesday, June 20, at 7:30 pm. Sam Fried, past president of Hartford Audubon Society, will give a presentation titled “The Intimate Galapagos — An Island Adventure.”

Isolated 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands are a natural laboratory of evolution, ready to reveal their ancient secrets to those who come quietly, look carefully, and are open to discovery. The animals there never developed any fear of humans and are as curious about people as people are of them. From Darwin’s enigmatic finches, giant tortoises, lizards, sea lions, penguins, iguanas, flamingoes and fish, attendees will learn about life above and below the water to discover the intimate lives of the Galapagos.

Mr Fried’s trips have taken him to islands in North, Central, and South America, each with their own distinctly evolved species, developing in response to the characteristics of the individual islands. He has seen 733 species of birds in North America and photographed 708. He has had hundreds of photographs and more than 35 feature articles published in field guides, books, and magazines worldwide.

Prior to the program, a buffet dinner will be hosted by the Naugatuck Valley Audubon Society at 6:30 pm. The dinner will be catered at the environmental center by The Twisted Vine of Derby and is open to the public.

The dinner is $20 and advance registration and payment must be received by June 15. Reservation payment and information should be sent to Naugatuck Valley Audubon Society, PO Box 371, Derby CT 06418.

A donation of $6 per adult and $3 per student for nonmembers of the Naugatuck Valley Audubon Society is requested from those attending the presentation only.

The program will take place at Kellogg Environmental Center, operated by the DEP Office of Environmental Education and located at 500 Hawthorne Avenue. For further information, directions or to register, phone Kellogg Environmental Center at 734-2513 or Dennis Kocyla at 734-9325.
