Dr Jane E. Oltman, 96, of Fairfield, died May 31 at her home. Dr Oltman was born in St Paul, Minn., on October 26, 1909, a daughter of Charles A. and Lucy (Hennings) Oltman.
She was a graduate of the University of Minnesota where she earned both her bachelorâs and medical degrees with a concentration in psychiatry. Dr Oltman received her medical license in 1936 and first worked in Concord, N.H.
In 1937 she married Dr Samuel Friedman. For a short period, she was physician at the Niantic Womenâs Prison, Niantic.
Dr Oltman was a staff psychiatrist and clinical director at Fairfield Hills Hospital in Newtown until 1970. From 1970 until her retirement in 1979, Dr Oltman was a member of the staff at Bridgeport Hospital.
 She was a founding member of the Spay and Neuter Association of Newtown. Dr Oltman was an adjunct professor at Yale University for many years.
Dr Oltman had been a resident of Fairfield since 1997.
Her daughter, Judith Kimball of Fairfield; three nieces, Mary Bishop of Evanston, Ill., Maria Vandersluys of Wisconsin, and Doris Oltman of Bozeman, Mont.; and a sister-in-law, Evelyn Oltman of Evanston, Ill., all survive Dr Oltman. She was preceded in death by a brother, Roy Oltman.
A memorial service and interment in Newtown Village Cemetery will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements were by Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown.
