I-84 West is currently closed prior to Exit 9 following a multi-vehicle crash around 8:30 am.
Firefighters, ambulance personnel, state troopers, and tow truck operators are all on the scene of the crash, which involved an 18-wheel vehicle and at least two additional passenger vehicles. One passenger vehicle ended up on the median following the crash. The 18-wheeler rolled onto its side, effectively closing the highway.
The scene is still active, with Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue and Hook & Ladder firefighters, Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps personnel, and CT State Police troopers are all still on the roadway.
At least one person has been transported to a hospital.
While some of the responding emergency personnel fought through the stand-still westbound traffic, others were directed to utilize the Exit 9 West offramp to access the scene.
DEEP has been alerted of the crash due to diesel spilling from the truck.
All three drivers were reportedly able to get out of their vehicles.
At 9:30 Tuesday morning, approximately one hour after the crash, westbound traffic was at a standstill for over seven miles, to the Ichabod Road overpass in Southbury.
Additional information will be posted on our Facebook and Twitter feeds. Full details will be printed in this week’s Newtown Bee.
